BERNARD BERENSON (1865 - 1959)

The godfather of art dealing created a market for Renaissance art and sold it off to the highest bidding industrialists and collectors. Born in the Russian Empire in what is today Lithiuania before migrating with his family to Boston as a child. The cousin once removed to actress/model Berry Berenson. He saved Neith Boyce, Mabel Dodge and their children in the earliest days of WWI when fascist forces were creeping around the hillsides of Florence, Italy. His legendary stand offs with Joseph Duveen over art values may have actually been theatre.
