He was lured to Provincetown in 1916 by Louise Bryant wife of journalist and founder of the Communist Labor Party of America John Reed, where many of his earlier works were written and performed by the Provincetown Players. The loosely knit group soon expanded into New York's Greenwich Village. It was the birth of modern American Theatre. He is played by Jack Nicholson in Warren Beatty's Reds. His drinking ways are ingrained in his legacy.
