This abstract expressionist Dutch-American painter spent time in the Provincetown dunes painting in the shacks in the 1940s while studying with Hans Hofmann. Much to the chagrin of his wife Elaine, a drunken Willem earned his place in the halls of P-Town infamy when he was arrested for indecent exposure while dancing naked on the beach as a hurricane was rolling in. Hofmann bailed him out for five dollars.
