BOLD SPIRIT by LINDA LAWRENCE HUNT
ANCHOR BOOKS (2005)
BOOKS ::: REVIEW

Helga Estby (1860 - 1942) was a suffragette and homesteader who trekked across the United States in 1896 battling the elements, hobos, wild animals and fate. She, with her daughter in tow, wore outfits deemed inappropriate which allowed their legs mobility to walk train tracks and cross rivers. They broke bread with both commoners and big wigs. In the end, she was punished by society and her own family for the consequences of her actions. Her diaries and journals were burned and she almost fell through the cracks of history had not her story been cobbled together in the 2005 book, Bold Spirit by Linda Lawrence Hunt. The book should be required reading in every school across the nation.
