Behind every great man is a greater woman. Susan Glaspell and her husband, George "Jig" Cram Cook, were one of the power couples that made the Provincetown Players work. Though Cook was much more visible in the troupe's formative years, whispers have lingered for years that she was the real brains behind the operation.
A successful novelist who emerged from Iowa's radical, Davenport Group, she became inspired by Neith Boyce's Constancy and spit out some of the groups first plays as both a solo writer - Trifles - and as a collaborator with the hubby - Suppressed Desires. She has been referred to as "American drama's best kept secret." She remained a Provincetown resident until her death in 1948.
