[Portrait of Billie Holiday, Carnegie Hall, New York, N.Y., between 1946 and 1948] by William P. Gottlieb. Library of Congress]
Born Eleanora Fagan and christened Lady Day by saxophonist and partner in crime, Lester Young. It's midboggling that much of her groundbreaking work took place in the 1930s while Holiday was only in her twenties. She was dealt life from the bottom of the deck but turned the pain into an eternal thing of beauty.
