The Route 1 Project is a sixteen city, eight week tour of musical discovery and documentation along the Eastern seaboard of the United States following Route 1 from Mile Marker Zero in Key West, Florida to the northernmost termination at the Canadian border of Fort Kent, Maine.
Conceived and conducted by Chuck White who has pursued his lifelong passion for music - as among other things - the chronicler of the Boston music scene, the Archivist for Dick Clark’s National Music Foundation and current Chief Archivist for the renowned David Bieber Archives (DBA). Chuck has long been struck by the historical and cultural importance, value and significance of John and Alan Lomax and their discovery and documentation of the music and spirit of America for the Library of Congress.
Chuck has chosen this route in homage to the late, great photographer Berenice Abbott who, in 1954, followed Route 1 with her camera as she discovered and documented the imagery and spirit of life along the way.
This is the first of an ongoing series of musical discovery and spirit projects that Chuck has planned to undertake in conjunction with the DBA. Subsequent tours will include Highway 61 Revisited – Revisited - and Route 66, as he continues to archive the music and spirit of America – equal part Charles Kuralt and Jack Kerouac on the road. For each city, Chuck will discover, document, blog, stream and, at the end of the day, deliver his first season of podcasts with his encounters with musicians, artists, nightclub owners, reporters, producers, authors, deejays and more. A soundtrack from the tour will also be commercially available.
When Chuck reaches Norwood, MA on Saturday, October 21, 2017, home to the DBA at the Norwood Space Center, we will host an event that will include performances and exhibits as a celebration of The Route 1 Project highlighting the rich resources of the Greater Boston music scene.
The entire project will be supported with an ongoing online presence and contextual narrative and conversations undertaken by motherlode.tv thus giving people a fuller appreciation of the music and how it enriches our lives.
