Jackie Washington:
DIY Magazine
The Broadside of Boston began as part of a humble mimeograph sheet music distribution ring and blossomed into a integral part of the New England folk network, a veritable, Rolling Stone magazine of its time. Jackie Washington graced the cover twice in the first two years of publication. Volume 1, No. 20. November 30, 1962 and Volume II, January 8, 1964.
1968
Tom Rush:
45 RPM Single
This is a white label Elektra promo record. The white labels were distributed by the record promo men to radio stations. They were prohibited to be resold but often found their way to bins at used record stores. This was a single from the 1968 The Circle Game LP which also featured Rush's coming of age moment, his masterpiece, "No Regrets." The song was written by Joni Mitchell. On the flipside was his rendition of the traditional, "Sugar Babe," first recorded by blues great, Mance Lipscomb.
1961
Joan Baez:
The 8-Track Tape
The 8-Track had its big coming out party when the first 1966 Mustang, Thunderbird and Lincoln models rolled off the Ford assembly line with the 8-Track player in the dashbord. This is Joan Baez's 1975 A& M release, "Diamonds & Rust" and it's still in the original shrinkwrap. The song of the same title, written by Joan for her former amor, Bob Dylan, would rear its head again as a set highlight for the nineteen-eighties British metal gods, Judas Priest.
1965
Baby, Let Me Follow You Down:
Books, Magazines & Newspapers
This book is the Cambridge folk bible written by Eric Von Schmidt and Jim Rooney chronicling the contribution made here and by the good people of New England relying primarily on oral history with a keen narrative by the authors to keep the tale on track. The title was lifted from the title of a traditional made popular by Von Schmidt and once more by Dylan. The first edition nearly impossible to find shortly after the 1979 publication.
1963
Kennedy Assassination:
Historic Headlines
The assassination of John F. Kennedy was a defining moment during the emergence of the folk explosion. A native son of Massachusetts. The loss of this symbol of virtue and valor left a generation in disbelief and marked the beginning of a decade of social upheavel and unrest.
1963
Timothy Leary:
33 RPM 12-inch LPs
Timothy Leary, Harvard Professor, and his trusted sidekick, Richard Alpert, made the ivy league walls breathe. They were politely shown the door and they would go public to extol the virtues of LSD.
1940s
The New Englanders:
78 Special
Ells and Millie Rand were known as "The Sweethearts of the Air" in the 1940s. They had a half-hour daily show that aired at 8:20am over radio station WJDA out of Quincy, Massachusetts. On Saturday nights, they handled the emcee chores for the jamboree that was broadcast from Jack Witschi's Sports Arena in North Attleboro, Massachusetts. They were also doing shows over WEAN in Providence, Rhode Island. - Gordon Brown, of the New England Country Music Historical Society

Maria Muldaur:
PHOTO ON FOAMCORE
This is a one-of-a-kind piece from fellow collector Jeep Holland who was known to laminate photos from magazines and blow up photos of musicians he was fond of. He had many record label related in-store promo pieces but through research, this is a photo with no record label connection. From a photo of Maria (D'Amato) Muldaur taken in July of 1964 at the Newport Folk Festival while she was still a member of the Jim Kweskin Jug Band. It was mounted on foamcore after being blown-up from an original photo by David Gahr.
